Hiking at Lake Wolfgang

Enjoyable mountain experiences in the Salzkammergut

Walk out the front door and start your adventure! Explore the fairytale landscape of the Salzkammergut directly from Hotel Aberseehof. Our gorgeous location between woodland and lake is ideal for putting on your hiking shoes and taking a stroll. One further advantage for hiking around Lake Wolfgang: the scenery on our side of the lake in Abersee is flat and superb for long, relaxed walks.

But the mountains are also within reach. When the dew is fresh on the alpine meadows and there is an aromatic scent of herbs in the air, you will experience that the early bird really does catch the worm. A hike through the mountains of the Salzkammergut lets you experience nature with all your senses! Discover natural beauty and dreamy locations on shank’s mare, for instance on a hike to the Postalm near Strobl or on one of our nearby mountains – the Zwölferhorn or the Schafberg, which you can reach after a trip with the nostalgic cog-and-pinion railway. But the Katrin – the mountain near Bad Ischl – is also well worth a visit. The view from the peak is stunning!

The peaks of our surroundings invite leisurely small-tour hikers as well as passionate mountain climbers. Tours of different levels of difficulty can be found here in our very own list of favourites for uplifting, varied hiking near Lake Wolfgang.

Plombergstein

The 830-meter-high Plombergstein offers a wonderful circular hiking trail, especially for families. Starting in St. Gilgen, a newly constructed hiking trail with numerous steps leads up to the summit. Once you reach the top, you'll have a fantastic view over Lake Wolfgang and the neighbouring mountains. The way down through the stone crevices is particularly exciting. Marked gorges and caves promise an unforgettable mountain experience for the whole family.

Falkenstein

The historic pilgrims' path from St. Gilgen across the Falkenstein to St. Wolfgang is very popular. After a short, steep climb, you reach the Falkenstein church and the cave where Saint Wolfgang lived. A short detour to the signposted "Aberseeblick" is also recommended. From a beautiful viewing platform you can look across the lake directly to Abersee. The descent leads you to the village of Ried, where you can, for example, travel back to St. Gilgen by ship on Lake Wolfgang.

Bleckwand

You can admire the impressive rock window at the summit of the Bleckwand after a longer walk or a short distance hike. As an experienced mountaineer, you choose the signposted trail in the district of Gschwendt. This leads through forests and meadows to the summit. If you want to save a few meters in altitude, you can take a toll road to the Bleckwandhütte parking area. From there you can reach the top in less than an hour.

Hike on the Zwölferhorn

You can climb the summit of the Zwölferhorn either with the newly built Zwölferhorn cable car or by a challenging hike. Starting at the valley station of the cable car, a steep, signposted trail leads up through forests, scree fields and meadows. The hosts of farmed huts along the way offer you refreshments for the rest of the hike.
There is the possibility for cable car riders to stretch their legs on a beautiful circular hiking trail at the summit. In good weather conditions you will be rewarded for hiking near Lake Wolfgang with a breathtaking view across the Salzkammergut.

Hike on the Schafberg

Similar to the Zwölferhorn, you can also reach the Schafberg summit by hiking or by rack-railroad. There are numerous routes for walking near Abersee, one possibility is to start in St. Wolfgang. The ascent requires some stamina and sturdy shoes due to the constant incline, as the path leads through stone-strewn terrain. Once you reach the top, a breathtaking 360° panorama opens up with a view of the many surrounding lakes.
